Fashion College Due Date Chart

Fashion College Due Date Chart

Every fashion school Mimi is applying to has different due dates and procedures!!

The reason for this blog is because applying to a fashion school is so different than a USA state university - all on the common app and most not needing a portfolio.

Having said that, all the art and fashion schools in London use a British common app - UCAS.  The schools Mimi is interested there all have the same application due date of January 15th but Kingston University has urged students to start ASAP as it fills up quickly.  The essay, letters of recommendation requirements, and portfolio's are different from each other.  But each school will have a admission's counselor assigned to Mimi - that's good.

a snapshot from her trip over this summer - see older posts for more information on the schools we visited

My last shot at trying to be helpful - senior year is busy, she's got a job after school, and directing a school play!  I wasn't a propeller mom for my other children - but this fashion school programs are in need of organizing!  I made Mimi a chart.
It's taped on her closet door - which is coated in chalk board paint in case you were wondering about the black with white scribbles behind the chart!

I made columns for the application deadlines, non binding early decision, rolling admissions, who wants an interview at National Portfolio Day (School of Art Institute Chicago does) and do they want the SAT scores - FIT does not! Yet, their portfolio requirements are the most vigorous.Christian Lacroix Couture Spring 2009 by Pippa McManus
I printed out the portfolio requirements when they were detailed oriented and Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising provided a male and female croquis Fashion Sketch Body To great fashion designer
for her to use.

I separated the London and Paris schools from the stateside ones - they wouldn't fit all on one sheet of  paper and I wanted the Kingston ASAP to stand out!!

Well, that's all I can do but be supportive.  On the Europe one I wrote "Je Peux" which translates to "I Can!"  I think I'll go back and write that in English on the American chart!

Look What Drexel Univeristy is Offering

Drexel University, Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Look what we got in the mail yesterday - a postcard from Drexel advertising their workshops for high school juniors and seniors!
*for more information on Drexel's Fashion Program and admissions - please visit this blog's postings dated September 1, 2014 and June 25, 2014

Offered in the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design are FREE one day workshops in the majors of Dance, Graphic Design, Design and Merchandising, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, and Interior Design.

These work shops are for perspective students who want to a degree in the arts but are unsure of exactly what they would like to study.
Drexel!  This is brilliant! As a mother of four children, I can tell you that many kids start school "knowing" what they want to study, only to find out that it isn't a good fit.  Drexel's program of workshops let a student try on a major before even enrolling.

  How smart is that?!

The Dance and Graphic Design workshop is October 17th

The Design & Merchandising, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design workshops are  November 14th.  Both dates are Fridays - but that's good too, interested students could get a feel of the campus in full swing.
I have known perspective students get a "yes or no" feeling when seeing the campus in person.  I wonder how many university's do this?  It's good for the students and their families get a feeling for the school before enrolling

and it's also good for the school - I am sure they want students in the right place to begin with.
I'd like to look into it!  Mimi knows what she wants to do I like the idea of having a college day experience for her.  And it's free!  Nice Drexel!

National Portfolio Day

NATIONAL PORTFOLIO DAY
                                          IS SOMEWHERE NEAR YOU!

The National Portfolio Association was created in 1978 for the sole purpose of assisting art schools connecting with perspective students.  The organization hosts portfolio review days all across the United States with representatives from all major art schools.
This is huge! Every art student needs to have their portfolio reviewed to gain entrance into a school.  The Art Institute of Chicago will count this review as an interview as well .  Mimi first went as a freshman just to look.  I thought that was a good idea.
I've said it before, I admire you art students - criticism can be hard to swallow sometimes,  it takes most of us well into our adulthood to get comfortable or at least OK with it.

For us in the Washington DC area it's Saturday November 22 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art

Rounding Up Drexel

DREXEL UNIVERSITY

Time to get back to work - wake up!

Drexel has an early action admission date of November 4, 2014.  A non binding early action!  If accepted - Mimi would have until May 15th to make a decision.  I think this would be a good starting place for her.

*please see 6/25/14 post for original notes on Drexel as a fashion program for Mimi

Drexel uses the common app and essay - 250 to 650 words - and a $50 application fee.  Because Mimi would be applying to the design program her essay has to be about why she wants to become a fashion designer.
The Admissions department wants to see your SAT scores and your high school transcripts.  They are requesting 2 letters of recommendation - one having to be from your high school counselor.  None of the other schools have asked for the counselor specifically but Mimi didn't find this odd.

Specific to the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design
click to download the brochure Mimi will need to turn in a portfolio of a max of 12 images her best work with a brief essay explaining her work.  This can be in the medium of her choice and submitted through highschoolportfoilo.com and work will not be returned.

The annual tuition is $44,646 but Philadelphia is closer to home than California or Paris so no real travel costs and there is guaranteed housing

Costume Design is available to study here!  That's something on her wish list.

In the first year of the fashion design program will include the History of Costume Design as well as an option of studying costume design.  Another required course for the freshman designers is Physical Science for Design!  This is a non calculus course which will include  Newton's Laws, kinematics (classical mechanics) circular motion and oscillatory motion Well, that's not common in the study of fashion design!

Drexil University's admission procedures are less demanding

than some of the other schools on her list.  Parson's has a complete "challenge" she has to fulfill - this is way less daunting - thank you Drexel!

A good place to start.
