Visit and Tour of
Istituto Marangoni and Paris
please visit Istituto Marangoni posts 6/11 & 12/2014
for original research
From our rental apartment Mimi, my husband and I boarded the Paris Metro for our first school visit.
Istituto Marangoni main campus is in Milan and Mimi has visited the London campus just last week. The two things in common in Paris is that they offer the exact program as the campus's in London and the Paris campus is smaller and more intimate - which our tour guide likes and want to preserve. (This goes with Parson's too, but Parson's next post)
Let's get started with Istituto Marangoni...
The school is a short walk from the Palace de l'Opera (and that metro stop) and housed in one building only which is modern and sleek and recently re-located to a this new building.
We sat down with the schools Information and Business Development Officer who was very helpful on course questions and visa's and housing. At IM there isn't a foundation year - jump right into design. There isn't a lot of classroom space but what they do have is pretty spacious. There is a projection system for quest lecturers, a discount to buy a machine through them to keep in your living space, large sewing areas and pressing areas
This is the board showing the runway show of the seniors work on the runway
Six students are selected to participate in Paris's Fashion Week - that would be quite an honor!
Because of it's small classroom and class size it would be more of a close knit community. There are no dorm's available but a housing officer is available help find a fit for your budget to renting an apartment or finding a host family to stay with.
The Italian Department of Education doesn't recognize a Fashion Degree Program as a degree, so all a student would get is a Certificate of Attendance. Warning to anyone thinking of attending a fashion school in Italy.
Happily this doesn't fly with IM in London and Paris so they are accredited with Manchester University - England for a degree. In Italy one would be recognized with the Italian Certificate as being to do the work of a fashion designer, but really, at the end of all this work and study - one really needs a DEGREE not a certificate of attendance. It was a modern space and campus, seems to look after their students and Mimi liked it.
I am a hundred percent sure that this would not be a well rounded education. I think a good fashion designer should be a fully educated one on more than one level - not just fashion. There is a lot of history and a lot that is happening to change that every day. It should be taught, embraced, and respected.
